Review of Lady Gaga's album Chromatica: Was the return successful or not at all?

Chromatica is the sixth studio album of American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, released on May 29, 2020, through the Streamline and Interscope Records, with the participation of music producers such as BloodPop, Skrillex, Axwell and Tchami.

Chromatica represents Lady Gaga's long-awaited return to the music industry, being the successor of Joanne, a country, soft-rock and dance-pop album, released in 2016.

In a first impression, taking into account the promotional singles, we can obviously point out that the sound is guided by dance-pop, electropop and synth-pop, differing completely from her last album.

What do you mean? Lady Gaga is versatile, not just restricted to a musical genre, innovating and showing that it remains relevant today.

Chromatica is the renaissance of the old Lady Gaga, being an upgrade of Artpop. This album stands out for the deep themes that make us cry while we dance and for not falling into exaggeration in electronics. Besides, it is divided in 3 acts: Chromatica I, Chromatica II and Chromatica III.

What is the purpose of the most recent work? She said she did it with the intention of people dancing and staying positive in the ups and downs of life. In my opinion, has the purpose been fulfilled? You'll know soon enough.

Welcome to Chromatica!

"Chromatica I" - Set the mood to enter the world created by Lady Gaga, being a grand entrance to what awaits us (reminds what precedes the beginning of a movie). The use of stringed instruments was a smart move as it provides a peaceful environment.

"Alice" - Beginning of the sound that will accompany us throughout the album. It makes us relive the sound of The Fame;

"Stupid Love" - The first promotional single perfectly demonstrates what to expect from Chromatica. Messages full of good vibes and sounds turned to dance floor.

"Rain On Me" (ft. Ariana Grande) - The second promotional single presents experiences and experiences lived by Stefani. It is one of the tracks that shows that this is one of the most personal works, since most or even all of the tracks have something attached to Lady Gaga's reality. It is a song that has a sound that stays in the head and that I believe does not go unnoticed in this new work.

"Free Woman" - It's one of my favorite songs. It's such a raw track, so connected to the spiritual and human side, to the adversities and fragilities that we have to face in life's journey. "Free Woman" is completely autobiographical, sensitive and honest, being one of the highlights, no doubt.

"Fun Tonight" is another of my favorite songs. It clearly mirrors the symbiosis, which unfortunately, your love relationships did not have with your career, being autobiographical. Besides, it is a trip to feelings and to understand that it is part of life to let people go. Highlight goes to the production and the vocal extension (including the well filled bass and also present in other tracks).

"Chromatica II" - Keeps the atmosphere shown in the first act. The increased rhythm creates suspense and anxiety that dictate a little the atmosphere of the next song.

"911"- Underlines how much we can be our own enemy. I believe "911" could be perfectly in The Fame or Artpop. There is a balance in the lyrics and how the instrumental is used in order to highlight it.

"Plastic Doll" - I believe it talks about how artists feel like puppets when they enter the music industry. One of the most positive points of "Chromatica" is to refer to past events and add recent moments, reporting the progress of the artist in question. "Plastic Doll" demonstrates Lady Gaga's frustration and personal and artistic progress.

"Sour Candy" (ft. BLACKPINK)- In my opinion, it is the weakest track of Chromatica and as such I think it could be quite disposable. Highlight Gaga's beautiful bass.

"Enigma" - As I mentioned before, there is a balance between everything that is used in the track. I reinforce the low register and amplitude of the voice demonstrated.

"Replay" - I think it might not be the most successful song. Nevertheless, it does not deviate from the rest, maintaining cohesion.

"Chromatica III" - It's the last and third act of Chromatica. I continue to praise the planning of the acts since they show coherence between them. I consider the use of stringed instruments to be something very positive, a triumph.

"Sine From Above" (ft. Elton John)- Without criticizing the two previous collaborations, I think that the union of Lady Gaga with Elton John represents the best collaboration of this album. I'll go further and say that if there was a track entitled "Chromatica", it would be this one. The representativeness of the sound wave as the salvation that music was for an artist, increases the degree of depth before the other songs. "Sine from above" symbolizes the importance of art, reflects the purpose of this studio work and captivates by the lightness and serenity.

"1,000 Doves" - It is one of the highlights of the album and is somehow the continuation of the previous track. The lyric content is one of the most beautiful of this project.

"Babylon" - Since the first listening, I consider "Babylon" to be the song with the most attitude and the most savage. Through the set of different layers, among them a choir, Lady Gaga gives us a hymn of freedom and overcoming.

REVIEW: Chromatica is Lady Gaga's personal self-knowledge. Despite the problems, the incessant search for a refuge, a safe haven, full of values such as freedom and independence. Admitting the problem, fighting to solve it, conquering a healthy and peaceful environment and dancing to the sound of your world full of positivity and overcoming the bass of life. Lady Gaga or Stefani Germanotta, as you wish, has reached her world with wound healing: Chromatica. Has the purpose been accomplished? Fully. I highly recommend listening.

Thank you for the Chromatica lessons.
