Review of Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia album
Future Nostalgia is the second studio album of the singer, songwriter and British model of Albanian descent, Dua Lipa, released on March 27, 2020, through the Warner Records label.
Future Nostalgia is the successor of Dua Lipa, debut album, released in 2017, which had as singles "Be The One", "Blow Your Mind (Mwah), "New Rules", among others.
I can say that it was one of the most interesting albums that I was eager to listen to. The opportunity to listen was given today.
Having listened to the first album, I can clearly say that this work is a super upgrade from the one shown on your debut album. It's bold, conceptual, brave and has female power. It is a union of the past, present and future of music. Has it fulfilled, given its name? Has she reaffirmed Dua Lipa as one of the best pop artists of this generation? Is he the artist we have to watch out for? You will and we will find out soon.
Welcome to Future Nostalgia!
"Future Nostalgia"-The track that gives the title to this project is a risk move, which fortunately paid off. Dua Lipa is here to stay. A track dominated by funk, electro-pop, electronics and funk-pop has managed to secure an entry marked by fearless and female power. Highlighting the harmonies.
"Don't Start Now" - The first promotional single shows Dua Lipa in her comfort, i.e. dance and upbeat song with disco elements to the mix. She wanted to reinforce the depth of her voice and the lyrical content, which makes her the successor of "New Rules".
"Cool" - I love Dua Lipa's voice! I love the depth, the raspy voice that she presents from time to time and the bass lines as well as higher lines, reaching a significant height as well as sound amplitude. One of the elements that raises this track is the break instrumental definitely.
"Physical" - Promotional track. The maturation, vocal extension and honesty. It presents 80's vibes that I feel it fits and that these elements do justice to the album's name.
"Levitating" - It's a song characterized by dance-pop, funk-pop, synth-pop, being quite playful. I really like the inspiration (spatial allusions) and the analogy associated to being in love. It's bold, confident and gives us a smell of rap skills. It's right and it was, without a doubt, one of the tracks that pleased me the most.
"Pretty Please" is probably the calmest track of this second studio album. One of the things that allows us to pay attention to Dua's voice is to accentuate it without distancing from the predominant beats, which show cohesion. I can feel the vibes of Julia Michaels, who is one of the composers of this chill song.
"Hallucinate" - promotional track. I think the maximum dance has been reached. Although she's not one of my favourites, I can easily see her succeeding by having disco and dance floor vibes. Once again, Dua Lipa reaffirms her ability to deliver a dancing hit.
"Love Again" - Dua shows a more personal side and her capacity for versatility. Highlight goes to the violins, which were a very clever addition.
"Break My Heart" - One of the promotional tracks of Future Nostalgia. It totally won me over from the first moment I heard it. It always hits the pre-chorus instruments, which can do the bridge very well with the chorus. The harmonies and the instrumental stand out.
"Good in Bed" - Able to be one of the most relatable songs, due to the theme being associated to a love relationship.
"Boys Will Be Boys" - In my opinion, there is no song other than this one that could be the last of "Future Nostalgia". Vulnerability, the female power that is connected to what is said in Future Nostalgia but approached in a different way, makes it a song that I strongly recommend. It is a voice for the girls, being associated with the growing pains that Dua Lipa had to face throughout her life. It's quite inspiring and personal, being a hopeful ending.
REVIEW: Future Nostalgia is the reaffirmation that we should not underestimate Dua Lipa and her musical skills. Has she fulfilled, given her name? Yes! It's a mixture of various influences, it's a unique approach. Did you reaffirm Dua Lipa as one of the best pop artists of this generation? Is he the artist we have to watch out for? Yes, I surrendered. When I saw the first album, I was surprised I didn't expect so much from a first album. It surprised me again. What sets you apart from other artists? I think it's your vision. I think she knows what she wants and she knows what market she fits into and she's not afraid to take risks. I think "Future Nostalgia" was a gamble, it was a risk, it was a breath of fresh air, it was an upgrade, it was innovative, it was futuristic, but at the same time, it was nostalgic. There was a mixture of the old and the new, which definitely worked. It was ambitious, daring, bold...
Would you buy this album? Yes. What tracks would you recommend listening to? If you know the singles, I'd recommend "Future Nostalgia", "Cool", "Levitating" and "Boys Will Be Boys". If not, I would listen to the promotional ones because they are a representation of the album and of what it will have relatively to the sound, for example, and the ones I mentioned.
